A third and less commonly proposed theory has been put forward by the esteemed researchers of Edinburgh University. They suggest that:

"In 1613, Kubb was invented by the then, King of Sweden - Gustav Viksrom III. Used in Sweden, throughout Scandinavia and latterly across northern Europe, Kubb was a form of conflict settlement. The elders of each tribe/clan would form a team of 2-4 players. A 'best-of-3' format was adopted and the match began. After that, it was all up to the players. All those on the losing side, including animals, families and sympathisers/supporters would be rounded up and massacred.

Of course, in modern times 'Kubb' has moved on. Women may play, team sizes and match formats are more flexible and losing sides receive consoling handshakes instead of axes to the head?!"

Over the centuries, Kubb dwindled in popularity on mainland Sweden but the game's traditions have been maintained on the island of Gotland, off the east coast of southern Sweden. As recently as the last 6-7 years, the game started to be played again all over Sweden, probably as a result of visitors to Gotland returning home with sets after long summer holidays' playing the game. Today it is said that over a million sets of Kubb have been sold and virtually every family in Sweden now has a set. It is also true to say that now no self-respecting summer party is complete without a closely fought game of Kubb. It has become so popular in fact, that an annual Kubb World Championship is held on the island of Gotland.

The game of Kubb has now evolved into a highly enjoyable (and addictive) outdoor game of skill and tactics, which is ideal for all generations. When asked to describe Kubb, it is quite a challenge to define it properly, other than saying that it is what results when you mix the French game of boules with skittles and wooden building blocks. This really does not to do the game justice and the only way to truly appreciate the great game of Kubb, is to go out and play the game yourself. So buy a Kubb set today and see what you have been missing for the last 1000 years!
